This past Saturday students of the Color Guard Program, also known as the Blue Radiance Color Guard, spent their day in Riverview’s Ron Wardlow Gymnasium rehearsing their 2017 program, “A Secret Chord.”

The team will debut their show at the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit National Class Premiere on Saturday, January 28 at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando. After that the team will progress their way through four regionals—including Riverview’s Blue Radiance Showcase of Champions on February 11—leading up to the FFCC Championships in Daytona Beach on April 2.

Led by Color Guard Director Herman Rios, this year is the team’s second year in Class A, having started with the FFCC in 2014 in Class B and being promoted three times since then to where they currently compete.

This past weekend the Blue Radiance Color Guard competed at the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit Plant City High School Regional and took home second place! In addition to their placement the team improved their score by almost six points compared to the week before.

Color Guard Director Mr. Rios had this to say, “The team’s improvement this year has been quite frankly astonishing. The circuit and judges expect scores to improve about two points a week. So for the team to jump six points shows how hard they have been working this year.”

The team competes next at Seminole High School on March 4 and their season will end on April 2 with their performance at the FFCC Championships in Daytona Beach.

Today the Blue Coat Regiment made their first appearance of 2017! The Blue Coats toured three nearby middle schools—Barrington Middle School, Rodgers Middle School and Winthrop Intermediate Charter School—and visited their 8th grade band classes. While there students heard the award-winning Regiment perform a portion of their 2016 program “The Address,” along with Riverview’s fight song “Go Sharks!” and some of the students’ favorite stand tunes. Directors Mr. B and Mr. Miller and select Student Leaders also spoke to the future Sharks about the Riverview Band Program and answered questions students had about the transition from middle school to high school band and school life.

Today’s performance was only a glimpse of things to come this season.” Bob Hahn, Booster Board President also commented, “It was great to see the enthusiasm everyone has to make this the best year yet for the Blue Coat Regiment. The performance the band gave during the dinner shows the dedication of our program and the show promises to be truly spectacular.”

For the second year in a row the Blue Coat Regiment participated in King High School’s annual Lion’s Pride competition—and for the second year in a row the Blue Coats earned 1st place in their division!

image

Because this competition is not a part of the Florida Marching Band Coalition scores and awards are awarded differently than most competitions the Blue Coats participate in. Despite that, the victories were many! In addition to their best in division win, with a score of 90.5 the Blue Coats earned a superior rating in the captions of percussion, color guard and drum major—the only captions a band can earn a superior in—as well as an overall superior rating.

Out of all 26 competing bands on Saturday the Blue Coats placed 2nd overall, bettering their 3rd place from 2016.

Congratulations to all of our students and thanks to all our parent and family volunteers for your support and hard work!

On November 11 the Riverview Band Program will host its third Florida Marching Band Coalition regional competition, The March. Previously known as the Tampa Bay Fall Music Games, the event was re-themed this year to honor the Veterans Day holiday on which it falls.

In one week eleven bands from throughout the state will take the field at J. Vince Thompson Stadium to compete for the top prize in the final week of the competitive season before the FMBC State Championships. The schedule for the evening is below.

Blue Coat Regiment Earns Top Rating for Fourth Year

On Saturday all 27 public high schools from Hillsborough County (plus the private Berkeley Preparatory Academy) performed at Gaither High School for the annual Florida Bandmasters Association District 7 Marching Music Performance assessment.

Unlike a competition, Marching MPA is done for an evaluation instead of a score. Bands receive a rating of poor, fair, good, excellent or superior in the captions of marching/maneuvering, general effect, music, auxiliary/color guard and percussion, with the music caption receiving two ratings from two judges.

The Blue Coat Regiment earned a superior rating in each caption, making this the fourth consecutive year they have earned a straight superior rating and the seventh consecutive year they have earned an overall superior rating. This also marks the eleventh consecutive year the color guard has been rated superior, and the fourteenth time since 2000.

Below is a picture of Directors Mr. B and Mr. Miller with our seniors after receiving their senior medals and hearing they were a superior band yet again!

This past Saturday the Blue Coat Regiment had one final performance of their 2017 show “The Trials,” in front of a standing room-only stadium at H. B. Plant High School in Tampa.

The students were performing at the Florida Marching Band Coalition State Championships Semi-Finals where bands from across the state were converging with hopes of claiming the top prize and moving on to the finals portion later that evening. When all was said and done the Blue Coats scored a 72.00 and placed 13th in the state!

“On behalf of the entire Program I want to congratulate our students for their tremendous spirit and the amount of hard work they put in this season. This year’s band was almost a third of students who had never marched before and to see where we are now from where we were is unbelievable. I could not be more proud,” said Director Mr. B. “It is also very important that it isn’t just the staff who got us here, but the Booster Board and volunteers. We say it a lot, but it’s because of you that we can do what we do. So thank you!”
